  1. Future without Poverty (FWOP)

  2. How FWOP started at UNTD? • The idea for the community garden came from student Carolyn Kimball. She did a service learning project last fall and learned about community gardens. During her research, she learned about Future Without Poverty, an international organization, and then she attended their summit last January at UNT Denton. Carolyn was then invited to start a student chapter at UNT Dallas…

  3. This new chapter began with an idea, but it was possible, thanks to the collaboration and hard work of the first volunteers of FWOP at UNT Dallas.

  4. Community Garden • FWOP first project, was to build an exhibition garden to showcase a larger community garden project, “The FWOP Community Garden”

  5. The exhibition garden was built from scratch. FWOP met every Monday to plan and implement the project. Everyone in the organization helped to create our beautiful exhibition garden.

  6. The garden is a service learning program and it goes along with the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold Certification). It is very important that we understand what sustainability is, and that’s what Future without Poverty is all about.

  7. Collaboration The Dallas County Master Gardener’s from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service were eager to collaborate with the nation’s newest university. We learned compost is the answer because compost is feeding the soil.

  8. Fundraiser • After the exhibition garden was completed, FWOP started a fundraiser selling popcorn, sodas, and pickles. • Again this was a success, thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible.

  9. Future Projects • The continued development of this project will provide on-campus service learning, leadership, and training in the nonprofit sector. Students accumulate their service learning hours by committing to various levels of participation in fundraising, building and gardening, and grant development. 10
