Park Hill Process • A committee comprised of parents, teachers, and support staff develop the academic calendar • Information is provided to the Board of Education and community in December • The Board receives a recommendation in January during a public hearing to approve the academic calendar

  3. Missouri State Law School Calendars

  4. State Law • Senate Bill 64 passed in spring 2007 amended provisions for school calendars; • School districts still have the authority to establish the opening date for school; • The calendar must include 6 make up dates due to inclement weather,

  5. State Law Continued • The start date cannot be earlier than ten days prior to Labor Day, UNLESS • The Board gives public notice of a public meeting to discuss an earlier start date • A public meeting is held • A majority of the board votes to allow an earlier start date at the public meeting

  6. Defining Parameters of the Calendar • New Teachers 194 days • Returning Teachers 189 days • Students 177 days Additional Teacher Days Include • Parent/Teacher Conf. 1.5 days • Professional Development 4.5 days • Building Work Days 6.0 days

  7. Calendar Considerations • 1st day of school • Last day of school • Holidays • Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Spring Break and Memorial Day • Balance of Academic Quarters (44.25) • Inclement Weather Make-Up Dates (6 days)

  8. Popular Objective • Start the school year late, take long breaks and finish early!

  9. Correspondence • Start later in the year • Finish before June

  11. Priorities for Calendar Decision Making • The calendar should support instruction and assessment; • The calendar should reflect the desires of parents and the community; and • The calendar should represent the interests of Park Hill Employees.

Identified Goals by Committee Members • Start after the second week in August • Finish the semester by winter break • Finish the school year before Memorial Day • Begin the school year with a partial first week • Schedule ½ work day at the end of each Qtr. • Review the structure of Spring Break • Consider snow makeup days first semester
