  2. Vancouver and Whistler will host 600 of the world’s best athletes with a disability from March 12 to 21 at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games Our 2010 Paralympic Story will be about the Games you can touch, not just the Games that touch you…

Vancouver 2010 will celebrate the true spirit of our nation - It will show the world what is possible when we embrace diversity, respect nature and live with the spirit and energy of our youth.

Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Competition Venues Hillcrest/Nat Bailey Stadium Park – Vancouver Sport: Wheelchair Curling Distance from Vancouver Paralympic Village: 4km Venue Capacity: 6,250 Elevation: 74m HIGHLIGHTS Scheduled completion: Winter 2008 After the 2010 Games, the curling venue will become a multipurpose community recreation center including an ice hockey rink, swimming pool, gymnasium, library and 6-8 sheets of curling ice; accessible to people with a disability.

Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Competition Venues UBC Winter Sports Center (University of British Columbia) Sport: Ice Sledge Hockey Distance from Vancouver Paralympic Village: 12km Venue Capacity: 7,200 Elevation: 90m HIGHLIGHTS Scheduled Completion: Fall 2008, with one rink already completed. Following the Games, the venue will become a recreational and high-performance multi-sport legacy facility. The new training arena will be easily convertible for ice sledge hockey training and competition.

  11. HIGHLIGHTS The Vancouver Paralympic Village is located on Vancouver’s inner-waterfront with extraordinary views of the city’s downtown skyline and coastal mountains. Athletes will be able to walk or bus to the city’s shopping and entertainment districts and enjoy nightly cultural celebrations just moments away. It will feature modern low- and mid-rise accommodation for athletes and team officials, an average distance of 12km from the Vancouver area competition venues. Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Non Competition Venues BC Place Stadium Location: DowntownVancouver Venue Use: Opening Ceremony Gross Venue Capacity: 60,000 HIGHLIGHTS BC Place Stadium covers four hectares and has the largest air supported stadium roof in North America. The enclosed venue offers many advantages in addition to protection from winter weather, including an unprecedented opportunity to stretch the boundaries of Ceremonies’ spectacle using state of the art lighting, projection, sound and special effects technology. BC Place is currently the home to British Columbia sport teams, concerts and large-scale events.

Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Competition Venues Whistler Creekside – Whistler Mountain Sport: Alpine Skiing Distance from Whistler Paralympic Village: 4.1km Venue Capacity: 6,000 Elevation: 810m (finish area) HIGHLIGHTS Alpine Super Combined has been confirmed as a new addition to the Paralympic competition schedule. All Paralympic alpine events will take place on Franz’s Downhill Course.

Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Non Competition Venues Whistler Paralympic Village Location: Lower Cheakamus Valley Venue Use: Athletes’ and NPC Team Officials’ Accommodations HIGHLIGHTS Scheduled Completion: Fall 2009 The Whistler Town Centre is only a short shuttle ride away for athletes and officials. After the Games, the Whistler village will leave a legacy of affordable housing units, an athlete high-performance center as well as affordable, accessible accommodations for athletes in training.

  16. HIGHLIGHTS The Whistler Celebration Site is located in the heart of the picturesque Whistler Town Center. It is a temporary, outdoor venue –the official venue of the 2010 Paralympic Closing Ceremony. NOC/NPC Services Mission Represent VANOC within the Olympic and Paralympic movements by building and maintaining strong relationships with National Olympic Committee (NOC) and National Paralympic Committee (NPC) partners, based on the accurate and timely exchange of information. Within VANOC, represent the needs and expectations of all NOCs and NPCs and ensure delivery of consistent and equitable service levels. 32

Communication with NPCs Principles • VANOC recognizes the NPCs as the only organizations • responsible for their countries’ accredited athletes and officials’ • participation at the Paralympic Winter Games. • VANOC will not bypass the responsible NPC if the request for • information or services comes from another unauthorized • entity or individual, including athletes, national sport • organizations and dignitaries of the NPC’s country. 34

Meetings with NPCs Visits Policy • VANOC strongly encourages all NPCs to visit Vancouver and the • Paralympic venues prior to the Games. • NPCs should notify NPC Services at least 30 days in advance of • their intention to visit Vancouver. • Visits by national sports organizations are hosted only when • endorsed by the responsible NPC. • VANOC’s official final date for NPC visits is October 31, 2009. 40
