  3. Activities • Glogerm Demonstration – Student Volunteers • How Lou Got the Flu Data Gathering – Paired group • Chain of Infection Data Organization - Small group • Chain of Infection Application Game – Large group • Immune Platoon Internet Interactive Tutorial – Paired group

  4. Catching the Ball Discussion • How effective was hand washing in removing germs from students’ hands? • Did germs continue to be passed from the ball to hands of other students throughout the activity? • What was the tally of catches for Student A? • What was the tally of catches for Student B? (We will use the number of catches later on in this infection control unit.)

  5. UNIT TWO - SAFETY Objective Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to: • Identify the transfer of microbes from one person to another, • Demonstrate the single most effective way to decrease the spread of microbes.

  6. How Lou Got the Flu Activity • Go to the American Museum of Natural History website at this address: www.amnh.org • Type in the search bar infection detection. • Click first result which says Infection Detection Protection • Click on How Lou Got the flu.

  7. Objective I will explain the spread of infection by organizing data gathered from How Lou Got the Flu and displaying this data in the Chain of Infection diagram.

  8. Review How Lou Got the Flu Data Gathering First cycle done together: Flu Duck Duck poops Pigs sniff poop Pigs have flu ** Now review all cycles in the transmission of flu to Lou.

  45. Important Note! • The flu is not always transmitted from animals to people. • People can give animals the flu. • You can get the flu from your family’s pet not just farm animals. Girl got the flu from the puppy. Cat got the flu from the man.

  46. Write a story • Write a story about how a person or animal got the flu. • Have the flu start in Russia and end in the state of Georgia. • Use the chain of infection in your story.

  47. Wash your hands often because during our daily activities we encounter many different germs that can make us sick.
