  1. Healthcare Science UNIT TWO: Safety Practices & Infection Control Modified by the CTAE Resource Network January 2010

  2. Standard Students will demonstrate the proper implementation of safe work practices to prevent injury orillness.

  3. Activities • Glogerm Demonstration – Student Volunteers • How Lou Got the Flu Data Gathering – Paired group • Chain of Infection Data Organization - Small group • Chain of Infection Application Game – Large group • Immune Platoon Internet Interactive Tutorial – Paired group

  4. Catching the Ball Discussion • How effective was hand washing in removing germs from students’ hands? • Did germs continue to be passed from the ball to hands of other students throughout the activity? • What was the tally of catches for Student A? • What was the tally of catches for Student B? (We will use the number of catches later on in this infection control unit.)

  5. UNIT TWO - SAFETY Objective Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to: • Identify the transfer of microbes from one person to another, • Demonstrate the single most effective way to decrease the spread of microbes.

  6. How Lou Got the Flu Activity • Go to the American Museum of Natural History website at this address: www.amnh.org • Type in the search bar infection detection. • Click first result which says Infection Detection Protection • Click on How Lou Got the flu.

  7. Objective I will explain the spread of infection by organizing data gathered from How Lou Got the Flu and displaying this data in the Chain of Infection diagram.

  8. Review How Lou Got the Flu Data Gathering First cycle done together: Flu Duck Duck poops Pigs sniff poop Pigs have flu ** Now review all cycles in the transmission of flu to Lou.

  9. Small group activity Chain of Infection Data Organization Infectious Agent Infectious Agent Susceptible Host Reservoir Host Portal of Entry Portal of Exit Route of Transmission

  10. Cycle #1 DUCK TO PIG

  11. Influenza Virus Infectious agent INFLUENZA VIRUS

  12. One possible route of the flu from animals to humans is from birds. Reservoir Host DUCK WITH THE FLU

  13. Duck Tail Duck tail Portal of Exit

  14. Duck poop sniffed by pigs Route of Transmission Ducks are mobile animals. Suppose the duck wondered into an area with pigs. DUCK POOP

  15. Pig’s Nose Portal of Entry

  16. Pig with flu Susceptible Host Pigs are curious animals. They sniff the poop and get the flu.

  17. Cycle #2 PIG TO FARMER

  18. Influenza Virus INFLUENZA VIRUS Infectious agent

  19. Pig with flu Reservoir Host

  20. Pig’s Nose Portal of Exit

  21. Pig licking Farmer The pig greets the farmer by licking his face. Route of Transmission

  22. Farmer’s nose and mouth Portal of Entry

  23. Farmer with flu Susceptible Host

  24. Cycle #3 Farmer to Shopper

  25. Influenza Virus INFLUENZA VIRUS Infectious agent

  26. Farmer with flu Reservoir Host

  27. Farmer’s nose and mouth Portal of Exit

  28. Farmer sneezes on money, ice cream The farmer unknowingly gives the flu to the shoppers by sneezing on the money and ice cream. Aaaachoo! Route of Transmission

  29. Shopper’s Nose and mouth Portal of Entry

  30. Shopper with Flu Susceptible Host

  31. CYCLE #4 SHOPPER TO STUDENT

  32. Influenza Virus Infectious agent INFLUENZA VIRUS

  33. Shopper with Flu Reservoir Host

  34. Shopper’s mouth Portal of Exit

  35. Shopper shares a drink with student The shopper accidentally gave the flu to the student by sharing a drink with him. Route of Transmission

  36. Student’s mouth Portal of Entry

  37. Student with flu Susceptible Host

  38. Cycle #5 Student to Lou

  39. Influenza Virus Infectious agent INFLUENZA VIRUS

  40. Student with flu Reservoir Host

  41. Student’s nose Portal of Exit

  42. Student sneezes on Lou Route of Transmission Aaaachoo!

  43. Lou’s mouth and nose Portal of Entry

  44. Lou has the flu Susceptible Host and that’s the journey of influenza from China to Kansas!

  45. Important Note! • The flu is not always transmitted from animals to people. • People can give animals the flu. • You can get the flu from your family’s pet not just farm animals. Girl got the flu from the puppy. Cat got the flu from the man.

  46. Write a story • Write a story about how a person or animal got the flu. • Have the flu start in Russia and end in the state of Georgia. • Use the chain of infection in your story.

  47. Wash your hands often because during our daily activities we encounter many different germs that can make us sick.

  48. Breaking the Chain of Infection

  49. What is the single most effective way to decrease the spread of harmful microbes (germs)?

  50. Pretty women buy fancy nails! What does that have to do with hand washing?
