  2. What is Tillage? The mechanical manipulation of the soil from a known condition to a different desired condition. Example: Plowing, harrowing, hoeing, spading

  3. Tillage Operations • Primary tillage This operation does the initial cutting or breaking of the soil at its state where either crop has been grown and harvested or a barren soil. • Secondary tillage These are operations on the soil after primary tillage. It includes breaking of soil clods or granulation (in dry land) or pudding (in wetland), through mixing of plant materials into the soil and levelling the field.

  4. Methods of Land Preparation • Upland/ Dry land Tillage is performed at relatively low moisture content (meaning dry), well below the saturation level. • Wet land/ lowland. The soil is tilled when it is saturated with water.

  5. Objectives of Tilling the Flooded Soil (Wet Land) • To control weeds • To mix organic materials with the soil • To incorporate fertilizers and soil amendments to the soil. • To turn soil into soft puddle for ease in transplanting. • To form hard layer (plow sole) which reduces water and leaching losses during the subsequent flooding stage.

  6. Objectives of Tilling the Upland Soil (dry land) • To control weeds • To mix organic materials with the soil • To incorporate fertilizers and soil amendments to the soil. • To develop proper soil tilt (desirable soil structure). • To improve soil aeration.
