MALAWI – THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA Landlocked Located in South East Africa Surrounded by Mozambique, Zambia & Tanzania Area of 118,484 square kilometres, which is about size of Pennsylvania 20% Lake Malawi South of the equator – latitudes 9/45 & 17/16 and longitudes 33 degrees 35 minutes. 900 km long with a width between 80 -160 km Population -13.1 million people. Capital – Lilongwe Currency – Malawi Kwacha Official language – English National language - Chichewa Very friendly people

HISTORY, GOVT & POLITICS • First settled in the 10th Century. • Colonised by the British up to 1964. • Became a one party state upon independence until 1994 • Multi party democracy from 1994 to date. • The President who heads state & government is elected for a five year term. Eligible for two consecutive terms. • 193 seat national assembly • 3 regions (provinces), North, Centre & South • 28 Districts
