  1. FUNGUS

  2. Structure A) fruiting body - reproductive structure - above ground B) mycelium - branching network - in soil/ on wood/ dead animals C) hyphae - basic structural unit - thread-like filaments

  3. Nutrition A) release enzymes that break down food then absorb nutrients through their cell membranes B) 4 types 1) parasitic - absorbs nutrients from living cells of host

  4. 2) predatory -in soil, mycelia trap prey

  5. 3) mutualistic a) “partners” with another organism (both benefit)

  6. 4) saprobial -feed on dead organisms or wastes - important role in recycling of nutrients in ecosystems

  7. Reproduction Asexual & Sexual 1) budding - with unicellular fungi ex. Yeast 2) fragmentation a) piece of mycelium breaks off

  8. 3) spores - specialised hypha - carried by wind or water - fruiting bodies = sexual repr. cap gills stipe

  9. Lichen 1) Composite organism - made up of 2 species: fungus + photosynthetic organism 2) symbiosis - fungus keeps lichen from drying out - autotroph supplies lichen with food

  10. 3) grow in extreme environments - rocks, trees, Antarctica 4) uses - food caribou, deer - dyes (wool, litmus paper) - break down rocks
