  1. THE INTERACTIVE PERIODIC TABLE

  2. ABSTRACT The Interactive Periodic Table module is designed based on the Smart School teaching and learning concept. This module is to complement the topic of “Classifications Of Elements In the Periodic Table” which is one of the learning areas in the Malaysian General Science Form 4 Curriculum Specifications . The aim of this module is to create interest and to make teaching and learning of this topic using interactive presentation more interesting to the Arts Students who find learning Science difficult . This teaching module is user-friendly as it uses Microsoft Office Software which is familiar to both students and teachers. One special feature of this interactive module is that, it can be used by both the teachers and students. The teachers can use it as a teaching courseware while the students are able to carry out “hands-on” activities such as crossword puzzles, colouring activities, arranging of elements in the Periodic Table as well as reinforcement activities to aid them in their learning process. Different approaches are integrated in this module. Guided Learning Approaches are presented in the Concept Map while the history and concept of the Periodic Table are presented through Power Point Presentations. From observations and feedback received since the introduction of this module in the year 2002, it is found that students enjoy using this module and are able to master the subject matter better.

  3. INTRODUCTION This Interactive Periodic Table is a model on how ICT is incorporated in the teaching and learning process. The opportunity to attend two courses – Curriculum Orientation Course and Learning Science Using The Smart School Concept at RECSAM in 2002 – has challenged me to design a module to integrate ICT in the teaching and learning process. During both courses, 10 pedagogical skills were revisited with an emphasis on using ICT. It is hoped that this Interactive Periodic Table with hands-on activities will get students interested in the subject matter.

  4. BACKGROUND • In the Malaysian Curriculum, General Science is a compulsory subject for all students of form 4 and form 5 with the exception of those studying in the pure science stream. Science is often viewed as a difficult and boring subject to this set of students. The teacher usually approaches this subject by asking the students to gather information using the textbook and sometimes through conducting experiments. For topics such as Matter, Motion, Coordination, and Light such approaches are inadequate. Other interesting teaching tools are required to make this subject more appealing to this group of students. Incorporating ICT to aid in the learning and teaching process is considered to be one of them. • This topic is chosen as the pioneer topic in the designing of this ICT based module because from observations, it is ranked as one of the most difficult topics by the students. Examination results also reveal the inability of students to comprehend this topic well.

  5. AIM This module is designed specifically to facilitate the teaching and learning process for both the teacher and students. The module aims to create interest and arouse curiosity in students towards this topic.

  6. OBJECTIVES • To facilitate the delivery of the content via ICT presentation • To arouse curiosity in students using the Guided Learning Approach • To draw students’ interest towards the subject matter • To give opportunity to students to use ICT facilities in the teaching and learning process. • To realise the School Computerisation Project of Malaysian Ministry of Education .

  7. SPECIAL FEATURES OF MODULE • This module is designed using the Microsoft Software (MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Word) which is familiar to both teachers and students. It is user - friendly and some items have been downloaded from the Internet. • The module can be used by the both teacher and students. The teacher can deliver the content using PowerPoint presentations and students are able to do hands –on activities in this module. This module is more student - centred. • Enrichment and evaluation activities are provided on-line. • Different teaching and learning approaches such as the Guided Learning Approach are being integrated in this module. • The module format is not static. The content and activities can be modified according to the syllabus and students’ level of competency • This module is available in CD ROM together with the user manual. Self access - learning can be carried out.

  8. ACHIEVEMENTS • Since the introduction of this module in 2002, many positive responses and feedback have been received from students and teachers. The students are interested to learn and are really engaged in the activities • Results of examinations also reveal that the students’ performance has steadily improved

  9. ACHIEVEMENTS General Science SPM results for SMK Kandis, Bachok, Kelantan (1998-2003)

  10. STUDENTS’ COMMENTS Comments from students using the module have been positive. Among the comments are that the module is interesting, easy to understand and the instructions and explanations are in detail.

  11. The Result of Pre Test and Post Test Form 4 Cemerlang , Student 2004

  12. STUDENTS’ COMMENT STUDENTS' COMMENT ABOUT THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF MODULE 1. Learning Activity become more systematic and fast 2. Easy to understand and interesting 3. Colourful in graphic 4.
