Energy Group Purpose • Providing the CWLEP Board and its partner organisations advice and access to specialist expertise, best practice and investment opportunities in sustainable energy generation and supply, low carbon infrastructure and the development and integration of innovative low carbon technologies.  Specific support is provided by the Energy Group to assist the CWLEP in: • Attracting inward investment to create jobs and growth • Delivering apprenticeships and skills • Reducing business operating costs through energy efficiency & sustainable practices • Enabling the local supply chain to deliver green growth • Supporting green innovation and new business development • Influencing regulatory change to support the CWLEP Energy Group priorities • Regional collaboration with LEPs to maximise investment opportunities • Key Sectors • Energy generation including renewables and district heating • Smart grid and energy infrastructure • Energy reduction and efficiency in commercial and residential buildings • Low energy commercial and residential new build properties

Successes 2012 -13 • 3,500 + homes refurbished in Coventry, Nuneaton and Rugby • £14 million inward investment (E.ON, British Gas, Npower) • £1 million DECC funding secured by Local Authorities • 420 construction jobs delivered • Local supply chain developed and supported by RETA • GVA uplift circa £1 million (each home approx. £300 better off) • Heatline district heating programme • £5.3 million public/private sector investment • Delivering low carbon heat to Coventry City Centre • Electric Vehicles • On street and rapid EV charging points delivered by E.ON • Electric bus service in Coventry operated by Travel De Courcey • Successful innovative EV4GP project demonstrating commercial • case for Electric Vehicles with local GPs • Skills, Apprenticeships, Learning and Research • Low Impact Building Centre and £5.2m Sustainable Building • Futures business support project established at Coventry University • 150 training places and 15 apprenticeships delivered by E.ON • Coventry top of English cities league table for reducing carbon footprint for third year running – down by one quarter since 2005

Priority investment areas 2013 - 2015 • Housing energy refurbishment investment - £60 million • Securing ECO and Green Deal, 1,800 jobs, £3.6 million GVA • Community Heat and Smart Energy investments - £100 million • Mira, Rugby Masts, Friars Gate, Coventry Gateway • Commercial and public building energy efficiency - £20 million • Energy Performance Contracts for Private sector and public sector • Renewable Energy investments - £10 million • Commercial solar PV and renewable heat in non domestic buildings • Maximise EU funds - £40 million Structural funds and Horizon 2020 • Deliver low carbon initiatives from EU LEP fund of £116m 2014 to 2020

Priority areas for EU Structural Investments • Addressing skills gaps in the renewables and retrofit markets • Supporting the development of whole place low carbon solutions in key development locations • Supporting investment in community energy initiatives • Enhancing SME competitiveness and sustainability through the provision of targeted energy efficiency advice • Supporting SME investment in low carbon technology • Supporting low carbon innovation in SMEs through collaborative mechanisms • Ensuring that SMEs are able to access the right support to enable the development • of low carbon products • Supporting the expansion of heat networks through capital investment • Supporting the introduction of smart grids within communities in Coventry and Warwickshire • Supporting the provision of low carbon vehicle and cycling infrastructure

  6. Possible specific actions • Support for activities that realise and enhance the job-creation capacity of the low carbon sector • Support the non-domestic sector to develop low carbon technologies and focus on energy Efficiency • Development of “whole place” low carbon solutions • Activities that accelerate the development, innovation, adoption, deployment and cost reduction of low carbon technologies and related supply chains/ infrastructure
