  1. Notes: Blood Types

  2. blood (n.) Old English blod "blood," from Proto-Germanic *blodam "blood" (cf. Old Frisian blod, Old Saxon blôd, Old Norse bloð, Middle Dutch bloet, Dutch bloed, Old High German bluot, German Blut, Gothic bloþ), from PIE *bhlo-to-, perhaps meaning "to swell, gush, spurt," or "that which bursts out" (cf. Gothic bloþ "blood," bloma "flower"), in which case it would be from suffixed form of *bhle-, extended form of *bhel- (2) "to blow, inflate, swell" (see bole).

  3. Notes: Blood Types (pg 15) • Humans have 4 blood types: A (IA), B (IB), AB (IA IB), and O (i)

  4. Blood Antigen = will attach to antibody and coagulate • A body with blood type A will attack blood type B • A body with blood type O will attack both blood types A and B!

  5. Universal Donor for Red blood cells = O • Universal Donor for blood plasma = AB

  6. Universal recipient for RBC = AB Universal recipient for plasma = O

  7. Wrong blood type transfusion results in AGGLUTINATION = clumping of blood and antibodies
