  2. World Class National Standards • Voluntary • Serve as Benchmarks • Based on what American Children Should know and be able to do by the time they finished high school • Focus on subject matter that “was most worth knowing”

  3. Establish a broad national consensus through the “participation of all interested parties” including parents, civic leaders and the general public, as well as teachers and scholars

  4. Standards Based Education Reform Assumptions: • Students do not know enough • Curriculum standards and assessments will lead to higher achievement • National and state standards are necessary to ensure US competitiveness in world markets • Federal guidance and local control can coexist

  5. Washington State: Education Reform Act of 1993 • Common learning goals • Raise academic standards and student achievement • Testing in Reading, writing, communication, mathematics, science, history, geography, economics, arts, health and fitness

  6. Task: • Divide into 4 groups. • Each group will examine a different set of EALRs: Civics – History – Economics -- Geography • Look at the benchmarks and determine whether that benchmark can be “covered” in a U.S. History course. • Prepare to report out to the entire class

  9. NCSS Definition of Social Studies Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinates systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a cultural diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.

Social Studies EALRs Social studies education is the integrated study of the social sciences to prepare young people to become responsible citizens who demonstrate individual and social understanding. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as history, geography, civics and economics. The primary purpose of social studies education is to help young people develop civic effectiveness. Civic effectiveness is the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for personal and public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
