  6. Why Assess? • To ensure that learners have attained a suitable level of competency of a subject or skills • This information is for the trainers and for the students • Assessment is to prove competency, not to rank students (for postings, awards, etc.)

  7. Characteristics of good assessment • Measures what it’s supposed to • Tests against the objective (and only that) • Consistent and reliable • Tests full range of skills & knowledge (objectives) • No surprises (student knows what’s expected)

  8. Characteristics of good assessment • Free of extraneous factors (e.g. language nuances) • Fair (cultural background) • Meaningful and so motivates • Assesses high level skills and understanding
