Projective Techniques • Ask test takers to give meaning to ambiguous stimuli • Response requirements are relatively unclear to encourage test takers to create responses that describe the thoughts and emotions they are experiencing • Projection is a defense mechanism that relieves anxiety by allowing a person to attribute thoughts or emotions to external events or individuals Smith, G. Method • The CDT is a structured nonverbal interactive task assigned to a family and observed by a therapist. • Materials: • Multicolored crayons • 12X18” drawing paper • Stopwatch INSTRUCTION: Each member of the family draws for 30 seconds followed by another member taking over by either adding on to previous work or creating a new drawing. During each subsequent round of drawing, the time limit is progressively reduced, heightening the intensity of the experience. Smith, G. (1985) The collaborative drawing technique.   7. Critical Review (agree with) • Is it a Projective test… • YES! Ambiguous stimuli: drawings of each family member analyzed by focusing on color schemes, overlap, and use of space • The test dealt with the whole family, which is vital in shaping how you evolve as a human being. • Gives each member of the family an equal chance to express their individuality, however still identifying the family as a unit. NO! it is more than projective • Focuses on family interactions before drawing begins • Focuses on interaction of family members during the test • Very outdated (1985)… should this still be in use?
