    1. Chapter 6 Section 5 From Reform to Independence

    2. Austin in Mexico City July 18, 1833 - Austin arrived in Mexico City President Santa Anna not in town Austin met with Vice-President Farias VP would not make a decision Austin had to wait for Santa Anna to return to Mexico City.

    3. October 1833 - Austin wrote a letter to Mexican officials in San Antonio Asked them to work with settlers to go ahead and set up a separate Mexican state government for Texas.

    4. Santa Anna’s Response November 1833 - Santa Anna met with Stephen F. Austin. SA refused to make Texas a separate Mexican state. He did agree to following reforms: 1. repeal restriction on immigration from U. S. 2. improve court system and mail system Would study other reforms

    5. Austin’s Arrest and Imprisonment December 10, 1833 - Austin left Mexico City January 1834 - Austin arrested in Saltillo, Mexico. Austin was put in prison in Mexico City. Mexican officials had read angry letter Austin had sent to San Antonio!!!!! Austin tells colonists to remain calm.

    6. Reforms of 1834: 1. recognized English language in official transactions 2. encouraged immigration from U.S. 3. improved court system 4. increased number of Texas members in Coahuila state legislature (Departments Of Brazos and Bexar) 5. granted religious tolerance

    7. Santa Anna Changes Sides: By end of 1834 - Santa Anna seized the Mexican government Abolished the Constitution of 1824 Dissolved each Mexican state legislature Placed the Mexican states under military rule Created a Centralist government; then became dictator of Mexico.

    8. Trouble at Anahuac Again! Spring 1835 - Andrew Briscoe argued with Captain Tenorio over collection of import taxes Tenorio arrested Briscoe. General Cos, Santa Anna’s brother-in-law, ordered more troops to Anahuac. June 1835 - William B. Travis led another protest against the fort at Anahuac. Tenorio surrendered.

    9. Most Texans did not support Travis’s protest. Colonists wrote a letter of apology to General Cos. General Cos demanded arrest of those responsible for protest. Also ordered arrest of Lorenzo de Zavala. Cos ordered more troops to Texas.

    10. Austin’s Release from Prison: October 1834 - Lawyers Grayson and Jack went to Mexico City. Austin released on bail on Christmas Day 1834. July 1835 - Austin was given complete freedom. September 1, 1835 - Austin arrived in Texas. ( 2 years 4 months)

    11. Call for a Consultation: August 20, 1835 - notice for a new convention of the people went out. Peace party – wanted peaceful relations with Mexico; did not want consultation. War Party – wanted consultation; wanted immediate declaration of independence from Mexico.

    12. September 1, 1835 – Austin returned to colony. September 8, 1835 - Austin gave his approval to the consultation. Austin changed his mind from reform to independence because: 1. Santa was becoming a dictator 2. large number of troops were being sent to Texas.
