Sentence structure. A sentence is a group of words which express a complete thought. Types of Sentences. COMMANDS. STATEMENTS. These supply information. eg . Shaun is going to school. These are used to give orders or instructions. e g . Do not enter through that door.

  1. Sentence structure A sentence is a group of words which express a complete thought.

  2. Types of Sentences COMMANDS STATEMENTS • These supply information. • eg. Shaun is going to school. • These are used to give orders or instructions. • eg. Do not enter through that door. • Write in a blue pen. Types EXCLAMATIONS QUESTIONS • These express emotions such as surprise, fear, alarm or anger. • eg. It’s a ghost! • This work is unacceptable! • These ask for information • eg. Where is Shaun going?

  3. Sentence classifications COMPLEX SIMPLE • This contains one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses which provides additional information. They are joined by subordinate conjunctions. • eg. Candice received her results/while she was recuperating in hospital/after she had broken her leg. • This has one finite verb and deals with one idea. • eg. Anne reads a book. Classifications COMPOUND • Made up of two or more simple sentences joined by a • co-ordinating conjunction. Two or more finite verbs. • eg. Dan plays soccer at school andworks on his computer at home.

  4. Subject and Predicate Anne The boys in grade 7 built the sandcastle. were happy to go to high school.
