Health and Safety Executive Welcome and Introduction Chantal Nicholls HM Principal Inspector Construction Wales
Why are designers important? • You design the structure, interpret the client’s wishes, influence the client’s choices – impact on constructability, operability, maintainability and removeability • Research estimates between 17% and 47% of accidents are traceable back to decisions made at the design stage. HSRR218
The Consequences “When you build a new house, put a parapet around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off, you will bring bloodguilt upon your house” Deuteronomy, Ch22 v8
Priorities • Workplace transport • Falls from height • Manual handling • Slips and trips • HAVS and noise
What can you do about risk? • Eliminate it , where possible - we would say most risk can be designed out OR AT THE VERY LEAST • Reduce it AND • Give information about residual risk you couldn’t design out
Why should you design out risk? • H&S consequences • The law • Project delivery and lifetime benefits
As well as those reasons, if you DO get it right….… we promise NOT to do an Ivan the Terrible on you !
