  2. 1948 July 26 Truman signed the Executive order 1981 and declared that there is equal treatment in the army regardless of race. 1954 May 15 The supreme Court- Brown Vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kan. (Overturned 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling) victory for the NAACP 1955 September Little Rock Nine 1961 May 4 • Freedom riders start 1963 May Birmingham Ala. Fire hoses and dogs on black protesters. June 12 NAACP field secretary murdered. May 28 March on Washington I have a dream speech. Sept 15 bomb in Sunday school

  3. 1964 Jan Poll tax abolished (made it difficult for blacks to vote) Summer Freedom summer a large effort to get blacks to vote. July 2nd Johnson signs the civil rights act of 1964 prohibits discrimination of all kinds. 1965 March Bloody Sunday Aug.10 Voting rightactof 1965 (easer for blacks to vote.) Sept 24 Johnson issues the Executive Order 11246 enforces affirmation action toward minority employees.

  4. 1968 Martin Luther shot April 4th April 11Johnson signs the Civil rights act of 1968 prohibiting discrimination of sale, rental, and fencing of housing 1971 April 20 Supreme Court Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Boardof Education busing can now be used in instigating schools 1988 Congress passes the Civil Rights Restoration Act, which expands the reach of non-discrimination laws within private institutions receiving federal funds.
