Write a mini narrative featuring a time this has happened to you. Don’t forget to include the other questions.

  3. Kahoot! • Get out a sheet of paper • Fold it into 4 boxes • Cut out 4 squares • On each square in BIG letters, write A, B, C, and D

  4. Unpack Embedded Assessment • Read the directions for your embedded assessment on pg. 127 • Once you’re done reading, create a T-chart in the notes section. • On one side, list the skills you need to complete the essay • On the other, list the knowledge you will need to complete the essay

Respond to the following opinions using red/pink or green. • America is a wasteful society. • Everyone should be forced to recycle his or her used goods. • Excessive trash is ruining our society. • People should be allowed to create as much trash as they want as long as they dispose of it properly.

What’s a claim? • A claim statement is a lot like a thesis statement. • They both establish what the essay is going to be about. • They both appear in the introduction. • However, a claim statement can be argued, such as whether a fact is true or not, a situation is good or bad, or one action is better than another. • It has a subject (the issue being discussed) and opinions (the main ideas presented) that support it.

  10. Example There are numerous downsides to year-round schooling. It has no positive effects on education, it adds to the cost, and it disturbs the long-awaited summer.

  11. Opening 2/28/18 • Put your claim statements in the middle of your group. • Answer the following question • Why is it important to use proper grammar in our writing?

  12. What is a modifier? • Words, phrases or clauses that provide description in sentences • It can create imagery within the sentences. • They give simple, bland sentences more PIZAZZ.

  13. Modifiers • Adjectives • Adjective clauses (tells what kind, how many, or which one) • Adverbs • Adverb clause (tells how, when, where, or why) • Prepositional phrases

  14. Lets Practice • The mailman delivered two dresses, which were made in China. • The tennis ball that bounced across the floor belonged to my brother. • Tommy scrubbed the bathroom tile until his arms ached.

  15. Misplaced Modifiers • When a writer puts too much distance between the modifier and the subject. Dangling Modifiers • When a writer does not include the subject the modifier is modifying.

  16. How to Correct Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers • Identify the modifier. • If it’s a phrase, make sure you include the entire thing • Identify the subject the modifier is supposed to be modifying. • Rearrange the sentence so that the subject is clearly being modified by its modifier. If there isn’t a subject, what kind of modifier is it?

  23. Evidence and Reasons Flip in you book to page 141. Reasons – the points or opinions the writer gives to show why the claim should be accepted. Evidence – more specific type of support that usually draws from or quotes a primary or secondary source.
