  3. Timeline of my [SHORT] Navy Career • Villanova University NROTC • August 1999 – May 2003 • Naval Medical Center San Diego • July 2003 – July 2006 • Naval Hospital Naples, Italy • July 2006 – July 2009 • DUINS @ Villanova University • August 2009 – December 2010

What is DUINS? • Duty Under Instruction • Opportunity to complete a graduate degree or post graduate degree in a specialty area • Funded by the Navy • Tuition and fees are paid in full • Full pay and allowances are granted • Payback is 3 years for 12 months of school, then 6 months of service for each additional 6 months of school

  5. Goals of DUINS • Prepare Nurse Corps Officer to Meet Subspecialty Need • Promote Attainment of Professional Knowledge • Recruiting and Retention • Recognize Individual’s Education Aspirations

  6. DUINS for How Many? • A maximum of 153 students in DUINS at any one time. Annual Military DUINS Selections • Range from 72 to 82 • Federal Civilian RNs have been budgeted for five opportunities each year at this time. • Dependent on training billet vacancies

  7. Requirements for DUINS • Academics: • Strong BSN GPA (3.0 or higher) • GRE >1000 • A’s in graduate level courses taken on own • Experience: • 2 years active service as a Nurse Corps Officer • Recommendations: • Command Endorsement, Specialty Leader Endorsement, 3 letters of recommendation

Recommendations for DUINS • Overseas Tour • Certifications • Clinical subspecialties • NRP, PALS, ACLS, ALSO, TNCC, ATLS • Fitness Reports • Above “Reporting Senior’s Average” • Involvement in the command, community, church, etc. • OSR • Make sure it is up to date! • Early Contact with Detailer/DUINS

What can I study in DUINS? • Manpower Analysis • Education and Training • Health Care Management • Med-Surg Nursing • Maternal/Infant Nursing • Pediatric Nursing • Mental Health Nursing • Community Health Nursing • JC Fellowship • ER/Trauma Nursing • Perioperative Nursing • Critical Care Nursing • CRNA • Mental Health NP • Pediatric NP • Family NP • Certified Nurse Midwife • PhD, DNP, PhD CRNA

What Schools can I attend if Selected for DUINS? • FNP, MH NP, CRNA, and Perioperative Nursing are required to apply to the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) as one of their choices. • If applying to school and returning from OCONUS Europe – apply to East Coast Schools. IF returning from OCONUS Far East – apply to West Coast Schools. • Research schools that are within close proximity to your current duty station or future duty station.

How to Apply for DUINS • Begin the process and planning 1 year before you intend to submit a DUINS application • Notify NC Programs at NMPT&E by sending a letter of intent • Print out a copy of BUMED Instruction 1520.27 F. (this is the DUINS Bible!) • Complete GRE’s if required for your university • Apply to schools with the program you would like to complete (at least 2 different schools)

Completing the DUINS Application • Program and school requested ( 1st/2nd choice) • School acceptance letters • Curriculum plan • Current contact information • PRD and discussions with detailer • Obligated service • Certifications/Subspecialty Codes • PRT Scores • Professional and Military Experience

Completing the DUINS Application • Transcripts • GRE/GMAT scores if needed • Letters of Recommendation (3) • Endorsement from Specialty Leader • Personal Statement (250 word limit) • Obligation Statement • Privacy Act Statement • PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD • SUMBIT (and keep your fingers crossed!)

  15. Requirements while in DUINS • Check in with sponsoring command/NROTC/PSD • Notify NMPT&E of arrival • Arrange classes, textbooks, school supplies, parking pass • Attend ALL classes • Maintain a 3.0 GPA • Maintain height/weight standards • BCA/PFA completed 2x year • Fitness Reports are “Not Observed”

Requirements while in DUINS • Submit grades to NMPT&E at the end of each semester • Submit cost quotes and school bills to NMPT&E each semester – they pay the bill… • Submit Leave Chit if leaving the area • NO Moonlighting – school is your “JOB” • TAD only if required for school • Study hard, have fun, enjoy being back in school!

Pros of DUINS • Great education • Minimal cost to you • You get paid your full salary for going to school • Maintain time in service/rank • Looks great at promotion boards • Flexible Scheduling • Time away from the Navy • School is your “JOB” • Opportunity to see how civilian hospital function • New friends • Easy to save money • School holidays are your days off

  18. Cons of DUINS • Commitment after graduation • Not eligible for bonus until commitment complete • Time away from the Navy • Change in pace from normal work schedule • Not allowed to “work” • Can be lonely • Easy to spend money

My DUINS Package • Undergraduate GPA of 3.6 • Applying from overseas • Experience in Inpatient Pediatrics, High Risk Labor and Delivery, Med-surg, Education • Rejuvenated the Health Promotions Department • Certifications as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN), OB-RNC, Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)

  20. My DUINS Package • Passed ALL BCA’s and PFA’s (Outstandingon 90% of them) • Command Activities: Teen Clinic, Family Advocacy Committee, Instructor for NRP and PALS • Letters of Recommendation • Personal Statement

Things to think about • What can you do that makes you stand out? • Are your fitness reports competitive? • Have you passed your BCA’s and PFA’s? • Are you ready to go back to school to study and write papers? • If you don’t go to USUHS, what military support is around you? • How far are family/friends from the schools you are applying to?
