  2. General information • Mljet is situated in the South Dalmatian Archipelago. The southernmost and easternmost of all our major islands • Area 100.4 km 2 with an average width of 3 km and length of 37 km (8.-largest island in Croatia). • Population: 1111 (according to the 2001 census.) • 21 villages, 13 coastal villages and 8 in the interior of the island

Observation Framework • Distance from the mainland (5 NM) and county center Dubrovnik (24 NM) • Dispersal and settlement total poor population (average: 11 inhabitants / m2 and 53 inhabitants / village) • Extremely long island (37 km air distance) • Outdated and inadequate municipal infrastructure • Variations in the number of users of public services and utilities (winter and summer conditions) • Low usage renewable energy sources

Opportunities in water supply • Installing PV panels on all water facilities approx: 5000 m2 • Use of PV panels on the surface of 5000 m2 gives a 1 MW installed capacity what is more than enough for the whole island needs • Use the resulting energy in places without the possibility of accession to the electrical grid • Potential water use in the raised geographic points (gravitational potential)

Drainage and sewage Energy needs • For 7 drainage systems in areas outside the National Park Mljet installed power will be 9.43 kW / system = 66.0 kW total • For the drainage system in the National Park Mljet installed power will be 161.83 kW • In the case of the power failure additional sources of electricity supply should be provided with diesel engines

General information for Sutmiholjska bay • This is part of the village of Babino Polje, former fishing village but now formed as a new potentially interesting tourist destination. • Located on the south side of the island suitable for the use of renewable energy • The lack of communal infrastructure needs investments in the construction of water supply, sewerage, public lighting, etc., presents a challenge to think about forming an Independent Municipal PowerSystem (IMPS)
