  1. 5th Grade News! September 2013 Curriculum Corner: Writing: Our writing time revolves around a program written and created by a widely respected “writing guru” named Lucy Calkins. The kids are having a great time writing personal narratives while learning how to generate exciting ideas, strong leads, and great details. Communication Arts: This week you received a letter informing you of our new word work & spelling practice procedures. Please read this carefully and ask your child any questions. Our first spelling test will be Friday, September 6th. Math: We are just about to wrap up our first chapter from our new math series, and it is going very well! The kids are really benefitting from the great amounts of differentiated instruction that is allows. Our first chapter covers place value from the millions place all the way down to the thousandths place in decimals. I am truly impressed with what these kiddos are able to do with their deeper understanding! Science and Social Studies: This week we are finishing up map skills and geography. The kids are having a blast preparing for their region presentations on Friday! Next week we will begin our Native American unit.
