  26. You Can Make A Difference ! Call Before You Dig Protect & Preserve the Markings Limit unnecessary Re-Locates Request Reasonable Locates • 10 addresses/same “100” block • 3 continuous blocks (urban) • 1 mile rural areas

  27. THE EXCAVATOR & THE MARKINGS Preserve the markings during excavation. (at all times throughout the excavation) Establish suitable reference points. Call for relocates only when necessary. Respect the markings of others

  28. CALL IN YOUR OWN LOCATES Never use someone else's “Dig-Ticket.” Write down information for reference. Sub-contractors don’t share with contractors. Excavators call in tickets for residential – NOT homeowners.

IDENTIFYING THE DIG SITEKnow the Area • Give detailed information • Use landmarks ( rivers, buildings, major streets & intersections, boundaries, etc.). • Not all developments are mapped. • Locates outside a city require: county, township, range & section number. • Plat books, assessors office, IDOT

  30. REPORT DAMAGED FACILITIES State Law (Iowa Code): Excavator must notify owner/operator when any damage occurs to an underground facilities Note: Federal law requires 911 notification if damage results in escape of any flammable, toxic, or corrosive gas or liquid…
