  1. Psalm 77 Asaph’s Inspiring Lament

  2. Why Study Psalm 77? 1. We have all seen good days and bad days 2. We have felt the lows of spiritual depression 3. We know that a firm root is vital to get through these lows 4. We know that a firm root involves casting all our anxieties on Him (1Pet. 5:6f) 5. Psalm 77 shows us how

  3. Historical Context: When & Why Asaph Wrote Psalm 77 • Asaph lived during the reigns of David & Solomon • He played a key role in good times and in bad • He probably knew about the promise to David (2Sam. 7) • He probably knew about the warning to Solomon (1Kings 9:6-9; 11:1-13) • He saw Israel begin to crumble firsthand

  4. Where Does Asaph Turn? (vv. 1-3) The Average Response: • Material Things • Drugs • Alcohol • Sex • Other Men (cf. Job 13:3-5) Asaph’s Response: • To God! (cf. 1Tim. 2:8) • Confident! (cf. Is. 65:24) • As God desires (2Chron. 7:14) Where Do We Turn?

  5. How Does Asaph Respond? (vv. 4-10) • With Humility! • With Openness! • With Sincerity! After Responding in this way, Asaph begins to recognize that it is his way of thinking that needed to change!

  6. How Did Asaph Change His Outlook? vv. 11-15 vv. 16-20 He remembered God’s proven compassion to Israel in past events! He brought to mind God’s providence!

  7. The Conclusion? • Asaph struggled just like we do. • Asaph went through spiritual bipolarity. • But, he overcame his spiritual depression • How? He learned to cast all his anxieties on Him (1Pet. 5:6f)
