  1. Warm-Up Pick your seat! Seriously, pick your seat. But if there’s an issue, I’ll move you.  You’ve been warned!!!!!!!

  2. Starting and Ending a Speech

  3. Boring, Blah Ways to Start a Speech for School “Well…” “Okay…” “So yeah, my speech is about…” “Hi! My name is…” “Today I’m going to talk about…” “Um…can I start? Okay, so…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=conLkx9GEUY

  4. Starting a Speech with POWER! • Ask your audience a question or a set of questions “How many of you brushed your teeth this morning? How many of you flossed yesterday? Did you know that keeping your mouth clean impacts your total health? I am here to show you that good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) leads to a happier and healthier life for all of us!”

  5. Starting a Speech with POWER! 2. Give a shocking but true statistic, fact, or statement: “Studies show that 8-12% of young children do not eat breakfast on a regular basis. Doctors and nutritionists agree that eating breakfast helps students focus at school and perform better on tests. Today, I will explain how breakfast impacts our day and why you should think twice before skipping breakfast ever again!”

  6. Starting a Speech with POWER! 3. Share a truth about yourself “I don’t know about you, but I am a night owl! I usually stay up until 11:00 or 12:00 working on homework during school nights and then sleep about 6 or 7 hours a night. Until I did more research on sleep, I didn’t realize the dangers of not getting 8-10 hours of sleep as a 6th grader.”

  7. Boring Ways to End a Speech for School “So that’s it.” “The end.” “That’s all I have to talk about today.” “So yeah…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbBzhNmIZRw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3wlW6PaTsA

  8. Parts of a Conclusion 1. Summarize main points 2. Tie your conclusion back to your introduction 3. Call for action (Tell you audience what they should do) 4. End on a thought-provoking note (give your audience something to think about) 5. No thank-you’s unless required by a teacher

  9. A Solid Conclusion “In conclusion, eating breakfast every day will improve your brain function, help you do better on assessments, and give you energy so you don’t crash. Currently, 8-12% of kids do not eat breakfast. Don’t let yourself become part of that statistic; let’s bring back breakfast! Think of the better student, friend, and person you would become by simply pouring a bowl of cereal each morning.”

  10. Practice Time • With a partner, you will have 13 minutes to plan a dazzling start and finish to a speech. • You DO NOT have to create the whole speech, just pick a type of beginning to use and make sure your closing includes all 5 parts • You may use made up statistics, quotes, etc • You may write it out on paper or note cards • You will present to a double table group • TOPIC: BEING KIND
