  2. What makes a reptile a reptile? • Cold blooded • Fully waterproof skins • Lay eggs with tough shells • Skin is often covered in scales or plates

  4. What does it eat? In the wild: • Turtles • Snakes • Fish • Snails • Birds • Frogs • Mammals that come to water’s edge In captivity: • Rats • Chickens • Rabbits

  5. Where do they live? • North Carolina – Texas • Fresh water • Slow-moving rivers • Swamps • Marshes • Lakes

  6. Do they migrate? • No they do not • Go through periods of dormancy • Dig gator holes • Dormant for most of the winter • Sometimes come out to bask in the sun

  7. Other facts • Live to about 50! • Average size male: 3.4m • Average size female: 2.6m • Front legs: 5 toes • Back legs: 4 toes! • 74 – 80 teeth at a time • Go through 2000 – 3000 teeth in a lifetime
