  1. PREPARING FOR AN EXAM • Plan a revision timetable. DO NOT wait until last minute to study. Study in advance, using the night before an exam to refresh your memory. • Condense notes - 1 page per topic. Use concept maps, flow diagrams, etc. to link ideas. • Peer testing. Revise together in small groups either at home or during lunch hour. • Make a list of topics that need further review/extra help. For extra help, see your teacher. • When reviewing, go over recent material first since it's fresh in your memory and then work backwards to earliest material covered in September.

PREPARING FOR AN EXAM • Try answering questions under test conditions at home. • Study past tests to recognize styles and learn from mistakes. • Try to learn some exact facts to use in an essay type answer - don't try to remember everything. • Reinforce a think positive strategy. Concentrate on what you DO know, not what you don't. • Get a good night's rest before an exam and have an adequate meal before your exam (do not come on an empty stomach nor overstuffed.).

TAKING THE ACTUAL EXAM • Come properly equipped - 2 pens, 2 pencils, eraser, ruler, calculator, etc. DO NOT plan on passing around supplies during the test. • Do the "VISUALIZATION" exercise to help you relax. • Visualization exercise: Close your eyes and visualize yourself taking the test. You smile when you see the questions because you know most of the answers. You feel calm and confident. You complete the test carefully. Visualize yourself handing in your paper. You feel very good because you know you have done well. Picture yourself looking at your exam grades. You feel very happy. You've done well and you're proud of yourself. • Before writing anything, skim through the entire test to get an idea of length and format. • Have a watch along and budget your time according to point value assigned per section.

  4. READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY and FOLLOW THEM!! Underline the key words if necessary. • Begin by doing everything that requires little effort from you. That is, do not waste time at the beginning attempting questions that you may never get. • Attempt ALL questions. On essay questions, always write something - even if it is brief. • On multiple choice - if you're unsure, always eliminate the definitely wrong answers. Work with remaining ones using logic. Avoid changing answers unless you're absolutely sure because your first recall is usually correct. • Do not leave blanks on multiple choice - GUESS!!! • Check your work as you go along.

  5. Think before you delve into essay questions. Make a mental outline of how you're going to go about answering a question in a clear and concise manner. Always reason out and use common sense on essays. • Be alert to words such as "ALL", "ALWAYS", "NEVER" on true/false and multiple choice. • Decide what type of answer should be given. Attention to words such as "LIST", "DISCUSS", "DESCRIBE", "TRACE", "COMPARE", "GIVE OPINION", etc,. • Before handing in your paper, go back to be certain that you didn't omit anything and check to see that you answered what the question asked.

  6. CAN YOU FOLLOW DIRECTIONS? Three minute time test: 1. Read everything before you do anything. 2. Put your name in the upper right-hand corner of the page. 3. Circle the word 'name' in the second sentence. 4. Draw five small squares in the upper left-hand corner of this page. 5. Put an X in each square mentioned in number 4. 6. Put a circle around each square. 7. Sign your name under the title of this page. 8. After the title write "yes, yes, yes". 9. Put a circle around sentences seven and eight. 10. Put an X in the lower left-hand corner of this page. 11. Draw a triangle around the X you just made. 12. On the back of this page multiply seventy by thirty. 13. Draw a circle around the word 'paper' in sentence four. 14. On the reverse side of this paper add 107 and 278. 15. Put a circle around your answer to this problem. 16. Now that you have finished reading carefully, do only instructions one and two.
