  1. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING TRANSILVANIA UNIVERITY OF BRASOV FACULTY OF WOOD ENGINEERING October, 2012, Padova Author: Ass.prof.dr. Camelia Cosereanu Transilvania University of Brasov

  2. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Motivation • Resources. • Research ways and endowment. • Results of the research team in Wood Engineering Faculty.

  3. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Motivation Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009: - Romania’s target for share of energy from the renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy in 2020 has to be 24% compared with 17.8% for 2005. Consequence: • new renewable resources as wood biomass, herbaceous biomass, seeds, husks and stalks to be used for solid fuels in heating power. • the large area of reed bed located in Danube Delta to be used for energy purpose.

  4. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • RESOURCES 1. Wood waste from wood machining (the most used species of wood in Romania): - beech wood, - pine wood, - spruce wood.

  5. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • RESOURCES 2. Water reed from Danube Delta region, from Tulcea reed bed, one of the largest in Romania;

  6. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • RESOURCES 3. Cones, bark and branches resulted from forest harvesting;

  7. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • RESOURCES 4. Waste from agriculture; • Straws • Waste from vine spring cutting

  8. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Research ways and endowment. 1. Determination of reed chips characteristics • repartition of chip sizes • determination of chips sizes • moisture content of reed chips

  9. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Research ways and endowment. 2. Hydraulic briquetting machine to obtain briquettes • the diameter of the feeding bunker – 900 mm • cylinder pressure - 120 bar • the diameter of the obtained briquettes is Ø 40 and the length is variable in the range of 30 ÷60 mm.

  10. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Research ways and endowment. 3. Determination of briquettes characteristics • density and moisture content • determination of compression strength (universal testing machine)

  11. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Research ways and endowment. c) Determination of calorific power (calorimetric bomb)

  12. RESEARCH ON BIOMASS FOR BRIQUETTING • Results of the research team in Wood Engineering Faculty. • Publications. • - Patent application for reed briquettes. • Proposals of projects (including IEE call for proposals 2011: name of project FIRST STEP, in cooperation with University of Ferrara). • Investigation on new proposals of projects; • Cooperation with industry in biomass briquetting field.
