Besides this, mountain ranges have a number of passes which are used to cross over from one side to the other. The Nathula, Jelepla and Chola pass lead into the Chumbi valley in Tibet through the Chola range in the east. Sikkim has spring fed as well as river fed lakes like the Tsomgo lake, Memencho and the Bidang Cho in the east, Khechodparli lies in the west of Sikkim. Sikkim is connected to the rest of the country by its 115 km lifeline; the NH-31/A. this is the only road connecting it to the rest of the country via Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Besides this, Sikkim runs a five - seater heli service between Bagdogra, the nearest airport and Gangtok, its capital. The important rail head is New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal around 4 hours away from the capital, Gangtok.

Success Story TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN – SIKKIM ‘NIRMAL RAJYA’ (click here more Details) Recognizing the importance of Sanitation and its effect on the progress and well being of the State, the Government of Sikkim fixed 2009 as the target year to achieve total sanitation as against the Government of India target year of 2012. To give it further impetus and accelerate the pace of implementation, in May 2008 TSC was taken up on a Mission Mode. It was made mandatory for all Gram Sabhas conducted in the state to take up sanitation as a top priority on their agenda. In addition, the State Government also amended the Panchayati Raj Act making it mandatory for the PRI members to construct toilets of their own in their households, failing which, the nominations of the PRI members for Panchayat elections are rejected. Several IEC activities were carried out diligently over a period of time in the form of printed booklets, pamphlets, audio-visual documentaries, multi-media presentations, banners, posters and bill boards in English as well as the regional languages of Sikkim.
