  3. Things you may face in the next few years • Supporting vulnerable students – mental ill health, homelessness, etc • Supporting students with matters to do with their sexuality and identity • Dealing with a disclosure of abuse

  4. What you need to know about safeguarding • There is new guidance issued by the DfE in April 2014 for everyone working in schools and colleges, which everyone is expected to read. • “Keeping children safe in education: information for all school and college staff”

  5. Child Protection • Know what forms abuse can take; it can happen in your college: • Physical • Sexual • Emotional • Neglect

  6. Child Protection • Also be aware of: • Students who go missing • Child sexual exploitation • Female genital mutilation • Forced marriage

Child Protection • Know what to do if a student makes a disclosure to you: • Do not promise confidentiality • Listen & ask only open questions • Record, sign and date what you were told • Know who to refer on to in your college • Keep yourself safe • Know what to do if the allegation is about a colleague

  10. Excellent teachers are excellent tutors, and vice versa • All teachers are called upon to challenge, encourage, support, guide and advise their students. Truly effective tutoring is the product of qualities which make an excellent teacher. • At the end of the year, how will you know you have been a good tutor?
