  1. Scientist’s Notebook

  2. Importance of a Notebook • Researchers of any age need to keep track of their activities. • They need a place to record their observations and questions; to reflect on their experiences; to record the data from their investigations and from other information sources. • Maintaining an organized record is a way to look back, revise, and plan for the next steps.

  3. Importance of a Notebook • The Scientist's Notebook is a record of inquiry; • it is a source of information to be used in discussions, as a reference for writing expanded explanations, informative articles and reports for the community of classroom scientists.

  4. Importance of a Notebook • From Galileo to scientists working on cloning, notebooks have been used to document scientific discovery. • Writing is one of the way to learn in science.

  5. How to Set up Your Notebook • You need to decorate the inside cover of you notebook. • Use the things that will represent you. • These must be school appropriate and include your first and last name somewhere on the page.

  6. You need to leave the first 2 pages for the table of contents. • You will need to keep a detailed Table of Contents. • The Table of Contents will be periodically graded.

  7. How to Set up Your Notebook • All left sides of the pages are even numbered. • Even numbered pages are for your notes, graphs, labs, foldables and your responses to assignments.

  8. How to Set up Your Notebook • The right side of your notebook is odd numbered. • Odd numbered pages are for the notes that I give you, and any handouts that we have in class (with the exception of those that go with a lab).

  12. How to Set up Your Notebook • When you complete an assignment, you need to title each page of your notebook with the title that I give you. • If you need additional room on that page, continue on the next odd/even page.

  13. Procedures for All Left Side Assignments • There are three things you must do when using the left side of your notebook and writing a conclusion: • First, You Must Make a Claim. • Second, You Must Use the Data that You Collected to Verify Your Claim. • Third, You Must Relate Scientific Reasoning to Your Claim And Data. • All assignments will be completed when your complete conclusion is written.

  14. Right Side Procedures • Many times we will take notes in class. • Sometimes you will receive guided notes for these. • These guided notes are designed for you to follow along as I lecture and for you to fill in the missing terms. • There for you must follow along and pay attention to the notes that are given. • Sometimes you will be tested on the notes that you took.

  15. Right Side Procedures • Additional handouts for the right side come in the form of reinforcement activities. • These handouts re-iterate what we have already learned in class.

  16. Right Side Procedures • In the event that we watch a movie, all notes and its quiz will be completed on this side of your notebook. • You must Always write a minimum of 10 facts from the movie. • Any notes that you take, you will be able to use on the quiz that follows.

  22. How to be Organized • Do NOT tear pages out of your notebook. • Use only pencil and/or colored pencil to write on the pages. • Colored pencils should be used for graphs and diagrams. • Use only a glue stick/tape to attach your pages…unless you are adding a page of notes to an existing page.

  23. How to be Organized • Stay focused • Keep track of all your work by keeping up your notebook. • Your notebook is your life, don’t loose it. • Use the remainder of class to finish setting up your notebook. • Number the rest of your notebook to the end of the book • Decorate the inside cover following the rules at the beginning.
