The engineering professionsdosystems for the manipulation of stuff. • Do = conceive, design, analyze, realize, produce, modify, operate, oversee, maintain, repurpose, recycle and retire • Systems = products, processes, or services • Manipulation = transformation in form, state, or location • Stuff = matter, energy, and/or information

ASEE Activities – 2YR-4YR Data Pilot • Supported by NSF (ENG-1042875) • Long-term Goals were to contribute to characterizing: • Number of 2YR students enrolled in e/et programs • Number of 2YR students who complete a assoc degree vs those who directly transfer to a 4YR program • Number of BS student who begin their study in a 2YR program

  9. ASEE Activities – 2YR-4YR Data Pilot • Precursor step –looked at student data systems • Results: • Sample of 8 2YR • Asked numbers and characteristics • Most 2YR colleges could not complete survey template

ASEE Activities – 2YR-4YR Data Pilot • Results: • Sample 17 4YR institutions • 100% of 4YR maintain demographic info on 2YR transfers • Only 70% of 4YR institutions maintain data on graduation rates, pre- & post-transfer GPA, etc. • Only 18% of 4YR institutions knew the students’ pre-transfer program of study

  11. ASEE Activities – 2YR-4YR Data Pilot • Policy Summit in June 2010 • Broad representation • Transfers vs. Natives • Realistic financial aid • Clearer articulation policies and better course alignment

ASEE Activities – 2YR-4YR Data Pilot • June 2010 Policy Summit Outputs: • Data-driven policy making • Focus on diversity retention as well as recruitment • Diversity includes more than gender, race, ethnicity • Support systems for transfer students • Recognize different starting points of 2YR students • Recognize different goals of 2YR students
