  2. What is Interreg III Community initiative which aims to stimulate interregional cooperation in the EU. It is designed to strengthen economic and social cohesion throughout the EU.

  3. Interreg’s overall Goal National borders should not be a barrier to the balanced development and integration of the European territory

  4. ΙΝΤΕRREG III Aims are achieved through: • cross-border cooperation • Strand A Programmes • transnational cooperation • Strand B Programmes • interregional cooperation • Strand C Programmes

  5. STRAND A – Cross Border Cooperation Aims at removing barriers stemming from the existence of borders and thus the programme is limited in adjacent regions

  6. STRAND A – PRIORITIES FOR ACTION • Basic Infrastructure with cross border dimension • Protection of the Environment • Cooperation in the fields of research, technological development, training and education, cultural activities, communications, health and political protection • Social Inclusion / Tourism / Media

  7. External Borders GREECE - BULGARIA GREECE - FYROM GREECE - ALBANIA GREECE - TURKEY Internal Borders GREECE - ITALY GREECE - CYPRUS STRAND A – PROGRAMMES

  8. STRAND B – TRANSNATIONAL COOPERATION • Aims to promote better integration within the Union through the formation of large groups of European regions. • These programmes also promote better integration between the Member States and candidate countries and other neighbouring countries.

  9. STRAND B – PRIORITY FIELDS • Drawing up regional development strategies at transnational level. • Promoting effective and sustainable transport systems, together with better access to the information society. • Promoting protection of the environment and natural resources, particularly water resources.

  10. STRAND B – PROGRAMMES PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT • Archimed CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT • CADSES • MEDOCC

  11. STRAND C – INTERREGIONAL COOPERATION Interregional cooperation aims to improve the effectiveness of regional development policies and instruments through large-scale information exchange and sharing of experience (networks).

  12. STRAND C - PRIORITY ACTION AREAS Cooperation initiatives in sectors such as • Research / Technology development • Enterprise / Information society • Tourism / Culture • The environment

INDICATIVE PROJECTS – Strand A (1)INFRASTRUCTURES • Connecting roads of Egnatia Odos • Siatista / Kristalopigi • Petritsi / Promahonas • Adranio / Ormenio • Xanthi – Ehinos / Goce Delcev • Common tunel of 450 metres • Border Stations • Creation of Border Stations at the terminals of those connections

  15. INDICATIVE PROJECTS – Strand A (2)SAFE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND GOODS • Procurement of equipment • Combat sea pollution • Rescue • Procurement of VTMIS systems • Study related to the compatibility of the systems of the two countries • Common technical guidelines • Coordination

INDICATIVE PROJECTS – Strand A (3)MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL ENVIRONMENT Integrated Management of water resources • Axios river and Doirani lake FYROM [Common water basin] • Strimonas and Nestos Rivers Bulgaria Project characteristics: • Compatibility of technical guidelines • Common Monitoring Committee • Information Exchange • Goal: Common plan of integrated Management

  17. BEST PRACTICE PROJECT –Strand C (1) Project title : Exchanging know how and transferring experience among project regions in Europe. Programme zone : WEST Topic of Cooperation : RFO Budget of operation : 8.312.474 Euro • National co-finance : 3.371.833 Euro • ERDF funding : 4.940.641 Euro

  18. BEST PRACTICE PROJECT –Strand C (1) Partnership : 25 border regions from 15 countries all over Europe (including Greece and Chech Republic). Scope of project : Promote co-operation among border regions and other regional / local stakeholders practically involved in cross-border co-operation.

  19. BEST PRACTICE PROJECT -Strand C (2) Project title : Local Governments Network of Central and Eastern European countries. Programme zone : EAST Topic of Cooperation : Network Budget of operation : 831.000 Euro • National co-finance : 483.500Euro • ERDF funding : 347.500 Euro

  20. BEST PRACTICE PROJECT –Strand C (2) Partnership : 4 partners from member state countries and 19 partners from pre-accession countries. Partners from Greece and Czech Republic. Scope of project : Deepen the LOGON network through focusing on practical issues of urban development.
