Objectives By 2015, Universiti Brunei Darussalam is aiming a place in the Top 50 in Asia as the first class international university with distinctive national identity (About UBD: UBD Strategies, 2011). In order to achieve this vision, UBD have continuously made concrete strategies to ensure that the students receive excellent learning experience through excellent academic teaching staffs and world-class research such as the Discovery Year programme. As part of the objective, The Spectaculars had carried out their statistical research to determine how much UBD has achieved to raise its international profile.   4. Statistics Number of international students received in UBD from 2011 and 2012

  5. No. of international students received in UBD between 2011 and 2012, measured by countries (Credit: UBD’s International Student Service Unit)

  6. From the stacked column graph above, the number of international students received in UBD was positively increased from 2011 to 2012. The highest total sum received in UBD would be Malaysia; that is, 123 students.

  8. According to the pie chart above, the majority of international students took Masters and PhDs. Also, 70 of the students were undergraduates.

  10. According to the graph above, the majority of the international students were fee-paying while others were given scholarships.

  13. The majority of respondents came from Southeast Asia, that is, located closely to Brunei Darussalam.

  17. The Spectaculars had found that the majority of international students were from the Brunei-U.S. English Language Enrichment Program for ASEAN 2012. Why is this so? [continuation to the next slide]

  18. “…Spearheaded by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the East-West Center (EWC) in Hawaii, the Brunei-US English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN is the brainchild of the respective governments to promote ASEAN integration."The language of ASEAN is English, the language of international engagement generally," said Dr Charles Morrison, EWC's president. "The purpose is to strengthen the institutions that teach English in the countries that need it the most Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam."Brunei and the US have jointly assessed the needs of the four countries after making visits there, and the programme's first participants will come to UBD in two weeks to begin training.After three months, they will continue their training at EWC…”(Quratul-AinBandial, 2012) HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah (C), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade was present to greet US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton (L) during the launching of the Brunei-US English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN, held at UBD.   19. No. of international students with respective payment methods for 2011 and 2012 As stated above, all international respondents received scholarships that made them able to study in UBD. Meanwhile, The Spectaculars were not able to find any self-funding students.
