The CAM PROJECT • “Complimentary & Alternative Medicines • (ssshhh) What you did that your doctor probably didn’t suggest • Began as a more elaborate study • Understand parent perspectives on the use of CAMs • IRB would be necessary in both locations • Changed to a focus on developing the survey

  6. Methodology • Evaluate parental decisions regarding CAMs • Population: • Parents/guardians of children with special healthcare needs specifically related to ASD • Survey content: • Current practices in seeking HC information • Conventional medicine experiences • CAM experiences • Demographics

  7. Potential Findings • Utilization of this survey in the broader project • Insight into caregiver decision making • Why caregivers choose CAM? Who influenced decision? • Relative perceived effectiveness of treatments • Which types of CAM are used? Were they helpful? • Possible trends in demographics • Understanding of why caregivers look beyond conventional medicines • Determine what healthcare professionals can do when addressing caregiver/parent concerns

  8. Suggestions for Change • Improve networking and team building opportunities: • All trainees meet in Utah initially • Team building and mixing activities • Decrease costs by having distant participants complete clinicals the following week if possible. • Establishes personal relationships and aides future teamwork • Meet your team in person and plan communication

  9. Additional Ideas: • Teams should include at least 2 people in the same local, possibly paired with 2 in another local. • Have project options • Alternative projects • Submit alternative ideas
