  1. 5 Major Themes in Child Development Ms. Burke

  2. Inspiration Friday • Ron Clark!

  3. Nature VS Nurture • Nature: A child’s development is based on their genes (what you were NATURALLY born with) • Nurture: A child’s development is influenced by their environment and the people they interact with

  4. Risk or Resilience • Risk: A disturbance in the child’s life that affects the course of their development Ex: An accidental head injury, an abusive parent, an unstimulating daycare • Resilience: The ability to bounce back after a traumatic event

  5. Continuous or Discontinuous • Continuous Development A child’s thinking, language, and social behavior gradually advances • Discontinuous Development A child’s development progresses through stages, where developmental milestones happen abruptly

  6. Sociocultural Context Unique customs, values, and beliefs on how to properly raise your child and the overall goals for their development Ex: how assertive you were allowed to be at home, if you went to preschool before kindergarten

  7. How Do the Various Domains of Development Interact? • A child’s development in 1 domain directly effects other domains Ex: A child’s physical growth influences their social and emotional development. A taller child may be given more responsibilities by the teacher or may be asked to lead a group of peers more frequently than a smaller child
