  5. History • Genex Cooperative • 48 artificial insemination cooperatives merged together over many years • MOET Farm started in 1989 • Started as a way to shorten generation interval to improve genetics faster

  6. Genesis MOET Program • Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer • Houses and Flushes CRI/Genex owned heifers • Implants embryos into recipients and calves them out

  7. Internship Duties • Calf Feeding • Watch for calf sicknesses • Artificial Insemination • Assist in calving • Assist with embryo transfer and flushing • Vaccinations • Synchronization • Pregnancy and ovary checking • Palpation • Ultrasound • Took blood for testing • 10:00 pm check

  8. Supervisor • Jennifer Thompson • Manager of MOET Farm • Arrange embryo flushing and implant schedule • Hiring employees and interns for farm • In charge of employee and intern schedules • In charge of feed charts for all animals on farm • In charge of barn arrangements for cattle • Etc.

  9. Initial Expectations • Learn about embryo transfer • Learn how to AI • Learn more about dairy industry • Generally get some good experience with cattle

What did I actually learn? • Embryo transfer and flushing • Scheduling, synchronization, procedure, etc. • Calf feeding procedures • Artificial Insemination • How to pull a calf • Bio-security procedures • Identifying calf illnesses • Ovary and pregnancy palpation • Ultrasounding • Ovaries and pregnancy- sex determination • How to give shots • Vaccination, synchronization • Etc.

  11. How did I get this internship? • Went to Ag Career Day • Talked to Genex Cooperative • Went home and looked on internet • Contacted Jennifer – my supervisor • Had a telephone interview with Jennifer • She called me a few weeks later to offer me the internship

  12. Professional Benefits • Genex Cooperative Networking • Met with many employees in different departments of Genex • Got A LOT of good experience • Helped me realize this is something I might want to do in the future
