What is a Maternity Services Liaison Committee or MSLC ? • In existence since the 1980s • In response to unique status of maternity care within NHS • Users of maternity services are usually well people - just having a baby - a normal human event • National guidelines drawn up that say every hospital trust should have an associated MSLC • We bring together users with service providers and commissioners at regular meetings • We collect feedback from local parents and represent their views • We try to influence the way maternity care looks like locally • Not a statutory requirement but seen to be good practice for CCGs to fund and support their local MSLCs

Brighton and Hove MSLC: what we do • 20 or so members - user reps, providers, commissioners • Meet bi-monthly at the RSCH for 2 hours • Lunch, childcare, travel expenses for parents provided • Follow an agenda, discuss aspects of maternity care, listen to guest presentations and make recommendations that are documented in the minutes • Providers and commissioners are expected to take recommendations back to the workplace • Follow Terms of Reference and a work plan • Publish a yearly report that details recommendations and achievements throughout the year and details of meetings • Present this report to the decision makers at BSUH, SCT and BH NHS

Brighton and Hove MSLC: listening to parents • Walk the Patch - on the postnatal ward, antenatal clinic and community groups • Parent rep meetings at chair’s house • Brightonandhovemslc.com • New text service - BABY followed by query/comment to 60777 • Postcards/posters • Forward parents feedback onto MSLC members, providers, commissioners and add to work plan • Refer parents to Supervisors of Midwives, Community Midwifery Lead, Health Visitor Lead, Birth Stories midwife • Meet regularly with Head of Midwifery and Lead Obstetricians • Listen to all MSLC members who have suggestions for improvements - add items to agenda

  5. Brighton and Hove MSLC work plan: five key areas 1. Brighton and Hove Birth Centre 2. Normalising Birth 3. Improving Postnatal Care 4. Improving Antenatal Care 5. A representative MSLC to bring about visible change

  6. Visible changes for 2012/13 • Refurbishments to labour ward with DH grant for privacy and dignity • Hypnobirthing techniques encouraged in labour ward booklet • Dedicated room on antenatal corridor for discussion of confidential notes • User input into Parent Info leaflets / BSUH protocols • Input into design of ‘My Pregnancy Matters’ website • New homebirth service with pre homebirth visit reinstated • ‘Welcome to the Ward’ laminated guides on postnatal ward • Kenco products have replaced Nestle at BSUH

  7. Other MSLC recommendations being discussed: • Our Brighton and Hove Birth Centre • UNICEF baby friendly status • Midwife caseloading service for vulnerable women • Review of BSUH’s universal Gestational Diabetes testing programme • Outpatient induction for homebirth • Improvements to Bereavement Service • Sustained increase in normal birth rates

Recruiting MSLC Service User/Parent Reps • Word of mouth • Website/email/texts through postcards/posters • Walk the Patch • Planned link up with women with interpreting needs through SIS • Healthwatch rep • Need representatives from LGBT and BME community groups • Need Dads ! • Lunch, travel expenses and childcare provided
