  2. What is a Swash Aligned beach? • A swash aligned beach is formed when waves break parallel with the coast. The movement of water and material is largely up and down the beach producing different features.

  3. What are these Features? • 1) Bay head beaches • 2) Bay Bars • 3) Barrier Beaches

  4. Bay Head Beaches • These build up in sheltered, low energy environments of coves. • Between two headlands, at the top of a cove which means this type of beach is protected. • An example of this is along the Dorset Coast where Studland Bay and Swanage bay are separated by sand (A bay head).s

  5. Barrier Beaches • These have a unique morphology, flora (Vegetation) and fauna (Animals). • The smooth straight Ocean edge is characterised by wide sandy beaches which slope upwards towards sand dunes anchored by high grasses. • Barrier islands are subject to a process called Wash over. This process, which can occur up to 40 times in a year, is where particles and sediments are swept over the land from the sea, which results in the seaward side being eroded and pushed backwards. • Barrier beaches from a Human view point is an essential natural defence against hurricanes and tidal waves.

  6. Bay Bars • A Bay Bar is formed when the river estuary flows slowly and deposits large amounts of sediments along from the coastline. • This creates a bar/barrier effect across the rivers estuary which people sometimes build roads and paths along. • For example wildlife parks might build thin walk ways for the public to walk along and see what happens to he coasts when this bay bar effect takes place.
