  1. The Learning Approach to Personality • Reflection Prompts – Take a sheet of paper and fold it into half and then half again. • Quadrant 1 - Make a list of the skills you have. • Quadrant 2 – Draw a symbol for a value that determines how you act. • Quadrant 3 – Name 1 short-term and 1 long-term goal you have set for yourself. • Quadrant 4 – School Reunion! – Write a 2 sentence prediction about the person you are in 2028.

  2. Behaviorism • External forces – not traits or conflicts – shape people’s preferences and behaviors (Watson – the conditioned emotional response) • Pay attention to how organisms behave and avoid trying to see within people’s minds (Skinner – operant conditioning) • Emphasis on the effects of reinforcement on behavior (Skinner + and - reinforcement)

  3. Socialization • Socialization – process through which people learn socially desirable behaviors • No personal freedom, choice, self-direction • Environmental influences shape us • Parental Approval • Social Customs

  4. Social-Learning Theory • Albert Bandura – focuses on importance of learning by observation • People act intentionally to influence the environment – not just at the mercy of the environment • Observation and the role of cognitive processes • Learning is purposeful

  5. On what is behavior based? • For the social-learning theorist, behavior is based on not just observation, but also on internal variables: • Skills (physical and social abilities) • Values (value placed on outcome) • Goals (regulating ourselves) • Expectations (predictions) • Self-Efficacy (beliefs people have about themselves)

  6. Final Thoughts Free Write (5 minutes) • Jot it down – Explain a situation/task in which your belief about yourself influenced how you behaved. • Be prepared to discuss with a neighbor.
