  5. This was a reference to the notorious legend of the ancestress of the house of Anjou (The Angevins). The legend goes that one of the early counts of Anjou, it is not clear who, returned from journey with a new beautiful wife called Melusine. She bore the count four children and was satisfactory in every way except one: she could not be persuaded to remain in church for the sacrament of mass. This troubled her husband arranged for four knights to stand upon her cloak and prevent her from leaving the service. The knights did as they were bid, but as the priest was about to raise the Host, Melusine tore away from the knights and shrieking she flew out of a window, takling two of her children and leaving two behind. She was never seen again and it was generally concluded that she had been the devils own daughter who could not bare to look upon the body of Christ. There were many variation of this well told legend and it was generally believed that the counts of Anjou were descendents of Melusine.

His eyes were grey and we are told that his voice was harsh and cracked possibly because of the amount of open air exercise he took.
