  1. PLANNING

  2. PLANNING • The interview gives you a vision of what the site is about, the next step is to determine • What will the site be used for? • What do you want it to accomplish? • Why would people want to come to it? • The website will serve a need (whether real or imagined). • Its purpose comes from the users’ reasons for visiting the site, and from the clients’ reasons for havinga website.

  3. PLANNING Define the Goals & Objectives • The purpose of the website states the websites goals and objectives. • GOAL is the desired long-term result – what the client wants to achieve by having this website • increase sales by 25% in 1 year (maybe a larger purpose of the organization) • OBJECTIVES are specific and concise – ways the goals will be reached • How will the website help to increase sales by 25%? • By showcasing certain products on the home page • Change the showcase every day (specific and measurable features on the site)

  4. PLANNING Define the Goals & Objectives • Types of websites • Billboards – online brochure • Publishing – ambitious in breadth and depth of content • Portal – gateways to services • Special interest, public interest, nonprofit – info for volunteers, devotees, novices, specific audiences or general public – links, contact info, assistance • Blog – personal web page reflecting personality and interests of the author • Virtual gallery – show off samples of art and design • Ecommerce, catalog, shopping • Product support – product infor manuals ,troubleshooting gudies • Intranet and Internet - orgranizations

  5. PLANNING Sample Goals – who would have these?

  6. PLANNING The Vermont Candle Company makes and sell candles and candle making supplies. Every Saturday in their store they have demo’s and workshops. Their main competitor is Yankee Candle. People like candles and they like to make their own candles. They also purchase mailing lists, print and mail out a catalog, this is a costly effort. They would like all of their products displayed for sale on the website, and they would like to update the product information themselves without having to hire someone to do it.

  7. PLANNING • The Statement of Purpose is a written statement that clearly describes: • The users reasons for visiting the site (interests) • The clients reasons for having the site (needs) • The Statement of Purpose is a few paragraphs. The key to its definition lies in the verbs that describe the website functions: • Increase sales • Find Recipes • Provide educational classes • Once you identify the verbs that describe the functions, it is easy to turn those into a well written paragraph, and also start getting ideas for its navigation.

  8. PLANNING How is the Statement of Purpose Used? • The Statement of Purpose is crucial in understanding what the website will be about. • If a website has no purpose, why have it? • By conducting interviews and branding (determining the audience and website purpose), the vision of the website should be clear. • Consolidate interview notes and ideas • Defining the purpose of the website is the starting point for the next step in planning: determining the audience of the website
