  1. Back to school Classroom procedures Originally Developed by: Amie Dean Modified by: LWE 5th grade teachers

  2. Entering the Classroom • If you need to eat breakfast, make sure you go to the cafeteria to eat BEFORE coming to class. • Please enter the room QUIETLY. • QUICKLY and QUIETLY find your assigned seats. • Remove ALL books, pencils, homework, and other assignments you will need for the day from your backpacks. • Hang up your jackets and backpacks. • Check ASSIGNMENT BOARD and quietly work on warm up activity.

  3. Sharpening Your Pencils • Sharpen 4 pencils in the morning so you do not have to go to the sharpener again during the day. • If necessary, you may sharpen your 4 pencils again during a break given by your teacher, before leaving for recess, or at the end of the day before the dismissal bell.

  4. Missing Materials • You should come to school prepared every day with paper, pencils, pens, textbooks, workbooks, and a personal book to read. • If an emergency occurs, you may borrow from the class supply or classroom library. You must turn in something for collateral to borrow. • BORROWED MATERIALS SHOULD BE RETURNED BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY!!

  5. When You Are Tardy • Get a tardy slip at the front office. • Walk quietly into class and give the tardy slip to your teacher. • Put your personal items in their proper place. • Sit in your seat and quietly begin working on the posted activity.

  6. WARM UPS • Each morning while attendance is being taken, a warm up activity will be on the board for you to complete. You should finish this activity by the time your teacher is ready to begin teaching.

  7. When a School-wide Announcement is Made • STOP what you are doing or saying. • LISTEN CAREFULLY. • Hold any questions until the end of the announcement.

  8. Responding to a Fire Drill • STOP all talking immediately. • Get out of seats and line up, quietly. • Other than your jacket, do not take any items with you. • Listen for teacher’s instructions on where to go and what to do next.

  9. Walking in the Hallways • Absolutely NO talking in the hallway. • WALK in a straight line. • Keep hands and feet away from the walls. • Be respectful of classes in session. • Do NOT jump up and hit the top of the doorways.

  10. Coming to Attention, “Give Me Five” • When your attention is needed, your teacher will hold up a hand and say one time, “Give me 5.” • You have 5 seconds to: • Be quiet • Eyes on the speaker • Be still • Hands free, put things down • Listen

  11. When Someone Visits the Classroom • Continue working quietly. • Allow your teacher to help our visitor. Do not speak to your classmates at this time.

  12. Headings on Papers • First and Last name and class code • Subject • Month/Date/Year • All the above will be placed in the top, right-hand, corner of your paper. • Title of assignment – this should be placed on the top line and should be centered

  13. Finding Directions for Each Assignment • Look at the board or instructions provided. • Think back to similar activities you have completed or information your teacher provided. • If you are unable to find the directions, raise your hand and wait for your teacher.

  14. Make sure your name and date is on the paper (see “Headings on Paper” section of manual. 2. If you need to staple papers together, always staple the papers in the upper left hand corner. 3. Do not place papers on your teacher’s desk. TUrning in Work

  15. When You Finish Early • Finish any incomplete assignments • Read your personal book • Work on homework if it’s okay with your teacher

  16. 1. All trash must be stored on a corner of your desk until your teacher is done teaching a lesson. • 2. No trash is to be thrown across the room or placed on the floor. • 3. When you take a band-aid out of the band- aid drawer, place trash in trash can. Do not throw wrappers in drawer. Throwing Your Trash Out!

  17. Working Cooperatively • Work as a team • Value and listen to each person’s response • Compromise • Take turns • Equally share the responsibility

  18. Saying “Thank you” • When a classmate or teacher does something nice for you, say thank you. • When someone gives something to you, say thank you, and do not complain. • You will notice more good things to come your way.

  19. When You Are Absent • You will receive a “We Missed You” form with all the assignments you missed. • You will have 2 days to make up assignments (unless noted differently from your teacher). Make sure to show your teacher the missed assignment when you have completed it.

  20. Cafeteria • Lunch room behavior and overflow table * Be safe * Be respectful * Be responsible • Quiet system (music) • Clean up (2 students)

  21. Homework Policy • Homework may include silent reading, long range assignments, skills based activity work pages, and/or assignments from a textbook. Homework should take 30 – 60 minutes, on average, each night. • An assignment ticket will be given to you if an assignment is missing or incomplete. On the day of the incomplete assignment, you will miss the first 10 minutes of recess. Assignment ticket

  22. Consequences • Any assignment tickets received during the week will be stapled into your weekly signed paper folder. • A parent signature is required on the assignment ticket. You will receive an “S” for having no incomplete assignments. A grade of an “N” will be given for one or two missing assignments and a “U” will be given for three or more missing assignments.

  23. Discipline The fifth grade discipline policy is based on a check system. 1 check = warning 2 checks = 10 minutes off recess 3 checks = silent lunch 4 checks = write an action plan 5 checks = sent to the office

  24. Consequences • You will receive a conduct grade at the end of every week in the signed papers folder. A grade of “S” will be given for no checks. A grade of “N” will be given for 1 or 2 checks for the week. A “U” will be given for 3 or more checks for the week.

  25. Documents to be Signed • When you receive any type of progress report, report card, permission slips, weekly papers, etc, take it home for a parent or guardian to view, sign and return. • Signed papers are sent home every Friday and should be returned Monday.

  26. Other classroom procedures • Restroom – sign out (one boy, one girl at a time) • Snacks • Getting things out of backpack (only during “locker breaks”) • Jobs/Helpers • Media checkout

  27. #1 Rule in Fifth grade Be Respectful to EVERYONE!

  28. Think about what the world would be like if everyone respected each other!

  30. Keeping Your Notebook • All work should be kept in your accordion foldable. • File the assignment in the correct subject area when handed back to you. • Make sure your foldable is neat, with no papers sticking out. • You will have a separate binder for Math which should be divided into 3 sections: 1) Math 4 Today; 2) Class Notes; 3) Homework • You should organize your foldable and Math binder on a regular basis.
