  1. 1-5 MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS MS. BATTAGLIA – ALGEBRA 1 cp Objective: MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE WITH INTEGERS AND DECIMALS, SIMPLIFY EXPRESSIONS WITH EXPONENTS, EVALUATE EXPRESSIONS.

  2. Warm up • Evaluate a – b + c for a = - 2, b = 3, c = - 4

  3. Work with a partner • During a space shuttle’s first stage of return to Earth, it descends about 3.5 mi/min (write this as – 3.5 mi/min). To find how far the shuttle descends in 10 min, you need to find (-3.5)(10). • Did the shuttle’s altitude increase or decrease? • Which phrase better describes descending 35 mi? Why? a) A change in altitude of 35 mib) A change in altitude of -35 mi 3) Is the product (-3.5)(10) equal to 35 or -35?

  4. Generalize… • Is the product of a positive and a negative number positive or negative? • Is the quotient of a positive and a negative number positive or negative? • Is the product or quotient of two negative numbers positive or negative?

  5. rules • +  + = + • +  - = - •  - = +

  6. example Evaluate for x = - 20, y = 6, and z = - 1

  7. example • Find the mean high temperature. Round to the nearest degree.

  8. EXAMPLE Use the order of operations. a) - 34 b) (-3)4

  9. Homework • P. 27-28 #2-30 even, 34-40 even
