  2. Kirk Koennecke Our very own Superhero. He challenges us, he empowers us, he makes us want to be better. He moves faster than the speed of light, but he is a visionary. Kirk is in a race every day to change education. Much like young Luke Skywalker in the Empire Strikes Back, the journey for school leaders becomes a struggle between the push and pull of the forces they must endure, unseen by many, resisted by some, and mythical to others.   5. GLS Receives Recognition - GES and GMS received STEM Designations from the Ohio Department of Education. This was a rigorous process that highlighted the innovative practices that were and are taking place in our schools. Graham Local Schools has 2 of the 55 STEM Designated Schools in Ohio. - AASA recently completed a case study where they were looking at schools that were bringing innovation into the classroom. Graham Local Schools was named one of the nation’s most innovative schools. - Graham Local Schools was accepted into the League of Innovative Schools after a rigorous application process.

  7. Graham Elementary: A Better Me Means a Better We. We are 1 of 9 public elementary schools in Ohio to earn the STEM designation. We just began implementation of The Leader in Me.

GES STEM Initiatives • Students are working towards Level 1 Google Certification • This takes place after school • Recycling Club (Green Team) • We recycle as much paper as possible • Currently have a design challenge to partner with a local greenhouse to begin a composting program of up to 20 cubic yards a week. • Ohio Design Challenge • Other challenges take place throughout the year • Coding: Hour of Code, Genius Hour • Annual Punkin Chunkin Competition • First year for the “Flyin Punkin Open” • Students are encouraged to form teams and go through the design engineering process after asking themselves: “How far can I throw a pumpkin?”

GES Opportunities for Kids FIRST LEGO Competition Team Students are coding and programming robotics to complete “missions” Work through the Design Engineering Process:Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve The Hatchery: Our model classroom where teachers learn from one another. It has flexible, adaptable seating. This allows us to not only learn from one another but also try out different teaching tools prior to making major purchases.

  10. Additional Afterschool Programming • Crazy 8’s Math: Teachers volunteer and work with students after school. (Crazy 8’s is free.) • Choir for 3rd through 5th grade starts in October and runs through April • Girls Who Code: Teachers volunteer and run a program after school for our girls. • Cardio Club: open to students to promote a healthy lifestyle.

  11. Trout in the Classroom Recently featured in District Administration Sept 2018 Student led project that raises 300-400 brown trout fingerlings each year from Nov. to May.

FALCON FARMS • GMS is fortunate to sit on over 42 acres of outdoor learning area that was unused for years. • It was time to reinvent how we were using time and space for students. • We are now working towards a self sustaining farm that is ran by students that includes: • 23 acres of tillable farm ground (Corn/Beans working with the High School) • 15 acres of Land Lab trails that are used and maintained by both the MS and ES. • 2 acres of speciality crops (Contained pumpkins, gourds, and Indian Corn this past year.) • Chickens • Bee Hives • Teaching Greenhouse • Raised Garden Beds • GLS has partnered with the local Virtual Farmers Market market Falcon Farms production.

Differentiation Through Personalized Learning If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. • Ignacio Estrada The Three E’s: (Enrollment, Enlistment, Employment) Enrollment in Post-Secondary Opportunities (Trade School, College, University) Enlistment in a Military branch Employment in the workforce Graham Local Schools celebrates each year the commitment that our senior class makes to one of the Three E’s. We believe that it is our responsibility to expose students to multiple pathways and prepare them for future endeavors.

Model Personalized Learning How can we expect teachers to personalize learning if we do not model this belief for our very own teachers? -Development of Personalized PD Pathways (Grow, Plan, Teach, Lead) -Worked with OEA and GEA to create MOU -40 hour requirement outside of contracted school day with students -FREEDOM!

  20. New Wellness Plan for GLS Staff A District’s Wellness Policy is an important tool for parents, students, staff and community members. By having a wellness plan in place, healthy living is promoted through various outlets in order to minimize child and adult obesity. A district wellness plan also provides assurance to all stakeholders that school meal nutrition guidelines are met using the minimum federal school meal standards.   25. ABBY URQUHART, VOLUNTEER Abby asked to volunteer. Saved the village 100s of hours working 3 days a week in 10th Grade. She saved the Chamber of Commerce thousands of dollars as a 12th Grader. Why didn’t Abby benefit morebefore graduation?
