  2. History of the Bastille • Construction began in 1356 until 1382 • Originally called the Chastel Saint Antoine • Was initially built as a military fortress, which was used to protect the city from invasion during the Hundred Years Wars.

  3. Voltaire • Imprisoned twice, once in 1717, and again in 1726

  4. Man in the Iron Mask • Most famous of the Bastilles prisoners • A very well treated man who wore a velvet mask • Prisoner from 1698 until 1703, when he sadly died. • Nobody knew his identity not even the guards.

  5. Use of Bastille during the reign of Louis XVI • Used as a prison, where he held people in secret without trial. • Used as a gateway to focus his forces on Paris. • Used it to assemble an army: • This displeased the Parisians

  6. French Peoples Views • The Bastilles political symbolism is what French citizens hated the most, it made them uneasy. • Viewed it as a hated symbol of the regimes past and a potent symbol of oppression. • French people worried that it was a sign of an imminent attack. • “Had come to symbolize all that was hateful with an absolute regime that allowed the king to imprison his subjects without trial and dismiss his ministers at will. (Cobb 73)”

  7. Attack on the Bastille • Parisians stormed the Bastille on July 14, 1789 • In aim to find arms & ammunition • Encouraged by Desmoulins & Danton

  8. National Guard • King formed a National Guard after learning of the conflict between 1st & 3rd estates • 3rd Estate took to defense

During the Storming/Result • Mob of Parisians arrived at Bastille on July 14, 1789 • Demanded weapons from the guards • Bernard de Launay(commander of Bastille) was negotiated with • After refusing to help Parisians, he was hauled out and executed • 98 civilians were killed, storming still successful

  10. Symbolism of the Bastille • The Bastille was a great symbol of power of the king • The fact that the peasants could take it over meant that they were much more powerful than once thought.
