  1. Warm-Up: October 18, 2011 • Which equation is inconsistent with 4x+5y=30? C

  2. Homework Questions?

  3. Solving Systems of Equations Algebraically Section 3-2

  4. Solving by Substitution • Solve one equation for one variable • Substitute this expression into the other equation • Solve for the remaining variable • Substitute variable value into equation from step 1 and evaluate to get the other variable • Check your answer

  5. Example 1 • Solve by substitution

  6. You-Try #1 • Solve by substitution

  7. Solving by Elimination • Arrange each equation in standard form, Ax + By = C • Multiply one or both equations by a number so the coefficients of one variable are opposite (one positive, one negative). • Add the two equations together. This will eliminate one variable. • Solve the resulting equation for the remaining variable. • Substitute this value into either equation to solve for the other variable. • Check your answer.

  8. Example 2 • Solve by elimination

  9. You-Try #2 • Solve by elimination

  10. Warm-Up: October 19, 2011 • Solve by any method

  11. Homework Questions?

  12. No Solutions or Infinite Solutions • If both variables are eliminated, then there is either zero or infinite solutions. • If the resulting equation is true (0 = 0), then there are infinitely many solutions. • If the resulting equation is false (0 = 4 or 5 = -3, etc.) then there are no solutions.

  13. Example 3 • Solve by any method

  14. You-Try #3 • Solve by any method

  15. Assignment • Page 120 #13-37 odd, 45-47 all
