  2. A Pedra Roseta é unha laxa de basalto negro e de forma irregular, incompleta na parte superior. Atopouse en xullo de 1799, cerca do gran barzo do Nilo cercano a Al Rashif (Rosetta para os europeos), localidade preto de Alexandría no norte de Exipto. Un oficial francés dos enxeñeiros do napoleónico chamado Bouchard, observou, xunto cos seus homes, unha lápida que contiña inscricións en xeroglífico, demótico e grego e deduxo que se podería tratar de tres versións do mesmo texto. Grazas o estudo levado a cabo polo profesor Jean François Champollion (1790 – 1832) sabemos que a pedra foi grabada con motivo da coronación oficial do rei Ptolomeo V Epífanes (da dinastía Ptolemaica), que tivo lugar no ano 197 a. C. Ben estudado o contido da pedra de Roseta, a súa tradución e interpretación, deuse a coñecer ó mundo e serviu e serve como exemplo para novas traducións. Desde entón o misterioso mundo dos xeroglíficos fíxose un pouco máis cercano e comprensible.
