  2. 1958 A tennis game was created by use of an oscilloscope by William Higinbotham at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA

  3. 1961 Spacewar was developed on a “PDP-1” at MIT in the USA

  4. 1972 Odyssey was launched, the first commercially available videogame for Television. It was very complex and very expensive

  5. 1972 Nolan Bushnell creates Pong and forms a company, Atari, to create video games

  6. 1978 Taito creates Space Invaders

  7. 1980 Pacman is released in Japan, to be played on a micro home computer.

  8. 1985 Nintendo release the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)

  9. 1989 The first hand held machine is released from Nintendo, called the "Game Boy"

  10. 1989 Sega releases the Sega Genesis

  11. 1991 Sonic is produced by Sega in response to Nintendo's Mario.

  12. 1994 Sony releases the Playstation in Japan

  13. 1996 Nintendo releases the Nintendo 64

  14. 1999 Dreamcast with its 128 bit processor is released in the UK.

  15. 2001 The Playstation 2 is released.

  16. 2001 In September, Nintendo releases the Gamecube

  17. 2001 In November, Microsoft enters the console market with the Xbox and Halo is released at launch, boosting sales hugely.
