  2. Art of Ancient Egypt • The Egyptians were one of the first major civilizations to codify design elements in art. • The wall paintings done in the service of the Pharaohs followed a rigid code of visual rules and meanings. • Early Egyptian art is characterized by absence of linear perspective, which results in a seemingly flat space. • These artists tended to create images based on what they knew, and not as much on what they see. • Objects in these artworks generally do not decrease in size as they increase in distance and there is little shading to indicate depth.

  3. Art Continued • Sometimes, distance is indicated through the use of tiered space, where more distant objects are drawn higher above the nearby objects, but in the same scale and with no overlapping of forms. • People and objects are almost always drawn in profile.

  4. Examples of Egyptian Art • The Great Pyramid of Giza • is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis. . • the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that survives substantially intact. • It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu and constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2551 BC. • Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years.

  5. Wall Painting of Nefetari • Nefertari was one of the Great Royal Wives of Ramesses the Great. • Nefertari means Beautiful Companion. • She is one of the best known Egyptian queens, next to Cleopatra, Nefertiti and Hatshepsut. • Egyptian paintings are painted in such a way to show a profile view and a side view of the animal or person. • This painting shows the head from a profile view and the body from a frontal view. • Their main colors were red, blue, black, gold, and green.

  6. Hieroglyphs • "Hieroglyphs" refer to the characters made by graphical figures, be it animals or objects. • The hieroglyphs that were originally used for recording agricultural products and handicrafts led to the birth of linear and cuneiform script. • The features that are visually well arranged about heavenly bodies, natural phenomena, animals and plants, God, humans, residences and households were used for 3000 years for recording Egyptian.

  7. The Sphinx • A '''sphinx''’is a mythological figure which is depicted as a recumbent lion with a human head. • Generally the role of sphinxes was as temple guardians; they were placed in association with architectural structures such as royal tombs or religious temples • The largest and most famous is the Great Sphinx of Gizaon the west bank of the Nile. • Although the date of its construction is uncertain, the head of the Great Sphinx now is believed to be that of the pharaoh Khafra.
