  1. Magnum Shear™ Testing Apparatus and Redesign Problem Team Clean Cut Testing Apparatus The  Magnum Shear™, produced by Bullet Tools, is used to cut flooring and siding materials by forcing a chisel shaped blade through the product in a 'crush cut’.  When cutting composite decking materials, the Magnum Shear™ causes ‘blowout’ in the lower portion of the cut. The blowout is characterized by crumbling of the material and a cut that is not clean or straight. The sensor package consists of a full Wheatstone bridge and linear potentiometer powered by a 5V source. The Wheatstone bridge, placed to capture the maximum moment seen by the upper I-beam, acts as a load cell. The double blade design, fitted on the original Magnum Shear™, controls crack propagation to produce a clean cut. This is done by having the lead blade cut slightly ahead of the trailing blade, which creates a thin layer of material that the crack propagates through.
